What They Needed

In the early beginning, Dutch retailer Body & Fit focused primarily on body builders and active fitness practitioners. But since then it has grown to become a household name for all kinds of people who want to live a healthy life. It's no surprise that in the last couple of years, Body & Fit's customer base has increased significantly. By focusing on endurance sports, weight care, nutrition and lifestyle products, the company is now aiming to reach anyone who wants to live more consciously.

And with such a goal, the company needed software that could support their growth. The ecommerce solution previously used by Body & Fit wasn't scalable. So, when the company grew bigger and bigger, it was time for a change. Body & Fit switched to Magento Enterprise. And rather than doing it in-house or giving the responsibility to a full-service agency, Body & Fit decided to let MediaCT take care of all the technical stuff. Something they haven't regretted ever since.

Body & Fit started with two physical stores in 1995, but over twenty years later it's now known as a pure play online retailer. The company is the market leader in the Netherlands and is aiming to be much more. "Our ultimate goal is to conquer the world as the fit people's supermarket", says Fritjof Haalboom, ICT Manager at Body & Fit.

Behind The Scenes

On average, Body & Fit processes about 6,000 orders per day. There are 160 employees (of a total of over 200) who work fulltime on the logistic processes. Body & Fit has its own warehouse of over 6,000 square meters, where trucks from different logistics companies pick up orders multiple times a day. And these orders don't go to domestic consumers alone; the company also operates a Belgian, a French and a German online store, which currently covers 15 percent of the company's total orders and increases every month.

In the Netherlands, Body & Fit is already market leader, but in the European market there's still lots of ground to gain. Usually, the retailer tries to build its market share abroad by starting with selling relatively many products from other brands. In a new market, it first wants to build a name for itself before the company starts selling its own products. "It's not that foreign customers are harder to attract, but we are just way ahead in the Netherlands. People know our brand. Just take a look in a gym, three quarters of all bottles feature our brand."

What Magento did

For over almost ten years, Body & Fit used a custom-made solution to run its online store. But eventually it could not scale anymore to keep track with the retailer's growth and ambitions. So they chose to find an ecommerce solution that fits their ambitions and switched to Magento. It chose Magento Enterprise, because of the benefits of its flexibility, the quick time-to-market and the opportunity to present tens of thousands of products. The strong reputation the software has and the option to launch multi-stores that can be managed from one database, also helped making the decision.

Body & Fit still hasn't any regrets whatsoever. With an assortment consisting of many thousands of products that are also often available in different colors and flavors, there is lots of data that needs to be processed as structured as possible. "And to keep it all manageable, we work from one central database and we have store views in Dutch, French and German", Fritjof explains.

The company is also happy with the support offered by Magento. "MediaCT is responsible for the entire platform and is also our primary point of contact. So, we don't have that much contact directly with Magento, but it’s a satisfying thought they could help us out whenever we need it. Because even if we would be offline for only ten minutes, it could cost us hundreds of orders. So for us, and I guess it applies for many other ecommerce companies, it's important to have a trustworthy platform and partner that gives support whenever that's needed", Fritjof says.

Most orders are placed by consumers, but Body & Fit also has a B2B portal for European companies, where about 100 orders come in every day. "This doesn't seem like much, but these are very big orders", Fritjof explains. Because of this, Body & Fit is now testing Magento 2. "We are being reserved with switching to the newest version. But it's crystal clear to us what the benefits of Magento 2 are for our b2b platform, so it will be made with this software for sure. And it also gives us the opportunity to experience what's it like to work with Magento 2. Because eventually our online store will also switch to this new Magento version."

Although Body & Fit has enough technical know-how in-house, Fritjof appreciates the fact MediaCT covers the technical part of its business. "We've had some talks with full service agencies and although the description of their services sounds promising, it often turned out they weren't specialized enough. MediaCT however knows its qualities: building, managing and optimizing Magento shops. And with our volumes, the fast-developing market and the complex nature of open source, that specialism is absolutely necessary."
